Who pushed Ken? Corrie cliffhanger over mystery fall

- By David Pilditch

CORONATION Street favourite Ken Barlow is about to be at the centre of a dramatic whodunnit after a mystery “fall” last night.

Shocked viewers saw the soap veteran, played by William Roache, lying unconscious at the bottom of his stairs in the ITV drama.

They are left thinking he may have fallen in an accident or suffered another stroke.

But in a bombshell development tomorrow night the plot takes a fresh twist as it emerges he did not tumble – he was pushed.

His family are given the shocking news as they gather round battling Ken’s hospital bed. Weatherfield police announce they are launching an attempted murder investigation after finding evidence Ken was knocked on the head before being shoved.

Skeletons

As the inquiry progresses, police realise family members have a number of skeletons in the closet.

They also discover Ken has recently had stern words with several of his relatives – presenting a list of potential suspects.

Actor Roache, 84, said of the storyline: “Well, my first thought was, ‘Are they trying to write me out?’”

He approached producer Kate Oates to raise his concerns about the dramatic plot.

He added: “Once I knew Ken would recover I was thrilled with the storyline.

“Strong stories are great to do, as an actor they are very enjoyable.

“I have always liked the idea of having this strong family, one of the oldest families, all together again.”

Roache – who has been in the soap since its first episode in 1960 – said it is a “great compliment” to be at the heart of the action after so many years.

He said: “I do appreciate it very much, I want to be able to do it justice and to be able to continue to be part of the action.” Speaking of the upcoming plot Roache said his alter ego “can’t remember a thing” about the incident.

He said: “He remembers the morning of the day quite clearly. Beyond that nothing that would give him a hint that he was pushed or who might have done it.”

Roache said he was also left in the dark about his attacker’s identity during filming.

He said: “We didn’t know and only now, some weeks on from filming a lot of the story and as we get closer to finding out in scripts, have we been made aware.

“It was great to play it like that and all of the suspects were told to behave as though they were guilty or hiding something.

“It was fun to be part of the secrecy and to act out the story not knowing the truth.

“I hope the viewers enjoy trying to work out who it could be in the same way we did.

“It is very cleverly done and I am thrilled to bits with it.”
