…We’re ready if you slip
away from surprise winners Leicester with four games to go last term, but draws with West Brom and Chelsea and defeats against Southampton and Newcastle, who were already relegated, saw them finish third, just one point behind runners-up Arsenal.
They are made of sterner stuff these days. Since Pochettino took over at White Hart Lane in 2014, Spurs have won 53 points from losing positions in the league.
This time it was goals from Alli, Son and Eriksen in the last six minutes that kept their title hopes alive. And Davies believes Tottenham’s stunning comeback is proof they are going from strength to strength. “Swansea was a very tough game – they were very organised and made it difficult for us,” said Davies, who was substituted in the second half as Pochettino searched for a way back into the game.
“But in the end, when you’ve got people like Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in your team, players that can make something out of nothing, it pays off.
“Games like this show we’ve matured as a team from last year. These games can be tough and to come out of it with a win is great.”
Chelsea have difficult trips to Manchester United and Everton in the title run-in, while Spurs still have most of the current bottom half to play.
But even if they fail to catch Chelsea this season and miss out on what would be a first league title in over 50 years, Davies believes Pochettino’s youngsters can still challenge for major honours in the years to come.
“There is a good group of players at this club,” said the 23-year-old.
“There are a couple of years left in us, so I’d like to think we could compete. Our aim is just to kick on every year.”
Davies has impressed in an unfamiliar wing-back role in the absence of Danny Rose, who is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered in January.
“I’ve had a nice run of games now and hopefully it can continue,” said Davies.
“It’s always about maintaining high standards and that’s what we’ve got to keep on doing.
“Wherever the manager wants you to do a job, you have got to do that. For me, as long as I’m out on the field,
that’s all that matters.”
