Ukip pushes for a ban on full- face veils

- By Macer Hall

UKIP will not try to unseat “good Brexiteers” from the Commons at the general election, party leader Paul Nuttall vowed yesterday.

And he also confirmed that a call for a ban on Muslim full- face veils will be at the core of Ukip’s push to polling day.

Mr Nuttall set out his party’s election campaign strategy during an interview on BBC1’ s Andrew Marr Show.

He declared that the anti- Brussels party does not intend to put up candidates against Labour and Tory MPs who have a long track record of campaigning to leave the EU.

“What I don’t want to see happening is good Brexiteers – not fly- by- night or five- to- midnight Brexiteers – people who have campaigned for years for Brexit; I don’t want to see them lose their seats and a Remainer be there in their place,” he said.

Mr Nuttall also stated that proposing a ban on face- covering veils such as the burka would be a key policy in Ukip’s manifesto.

“We have a heightened security risk at the moment,” he said, “and for CCTV to be effective you need to see people’s faces, because whether we like it or not in this country there’s more CCTV per head than anywhere else on the planet.

“We’re the most watched and for that to be effective you need to see people’s faces. Secondly, there’s the issue of integration. I don’t believe you can integrate fully and enjoy the fruits of British society if you can’t see people’s faces,” he said.
