First- timer Josh on top of world
JOSH GRIFFITHS ran his way into Britain’s team for the World Championships with a stunning performance in the London Marathon.
The Swansea Harrier, 23, was the fi rst Briton home in 13th on his debut over the distance. He fi nished in 2: 14: 49.
“It’s my fi rst marathon, I never even considered a British place – it was always to qualify for the Commonwealth Games for Wales,” said Griffi ths, a student studying sports coaching.
“I never considered the Worlds until I crossed the line.
“I was hoping to run under 2: 16 – I knew it would be a big ask but I thought I’d give it a go.
“It felt great all the way round. The crowd helped carry me round and I was passing people. I still can’t believe it.”
Callum Hawkins, ninth in Rio and who did not run yesterday, had been pre- selected for the Worlds. The fi rst two Britons home inside the qualifying time of 2: 16 would be joining him. Griffi ths was followed by Robbie Simpson, 15th in 2: 15: 04, and Andrew Davies in 16th in 2: 15: 11.
