Mason eager to join Europe’s elite

- By Gideon Brooks

MASON HOLGATE says Ronald Koeman’s improving Everton side are setting their sights on a top-four spot next season.

The defender, one of the Toffees’ breakthrough stars in the current campaign, cannot wait to dip his toe into the waters of European football.

But he believes the club, who are currently sixth and on course to qualify for the Europa League, should be ambitious and look to bridge the gap to the elite competition inside a season. “I think we should be aiming for Champions League next season,” said the 20-year-old.

“The Europa League would obviously be massive for the club and we feel like we should be playing in Europe. It is definitely something we are aiming for and, with a strong end to the season, it is something we are hoping we get.

“But for a few draws, we could have been talking about top four this season.

“It is little runs here and there and little things going for you, that is the difference. That is where this season has just dropped a little short for us but hopefully next season there will be a difference, especially with being in Europe, which will test the squad.”

Holgate has made 17 appearances for Koeman’s side this season and clearly believes the Toffees, who were taken over by billionaire Farhad Moshiri last season, are going places. “You can feel the vibe around the club, not only with what is happening off the pitch but on it as well,” he said.

“We’re all improving and clicking as well, so it’s definitely an exciting time to be here.”
