Asylum seeker beat wife for not cooking dinner

- By Anil Dawar

AN ASYLUM seeker who married a British woman to strengthen his case for a visa attacked her with a hammer when she did not cook his dinner.

Mohsin Akram, 21, launched the terrifying attack after coming home drunk in the early hours of Christmas Eve to find his wife sleeping and no food ready for him.

The Pakistani’s hour-long assault on Mariam Hussain, 20, happened as their four-month-old son lay sleeping nearby.

Akram was jailed for 15 months at Cardiff Crown Court last week after pleading guilty to actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Yesterday Mrs Hussain criticised the judge for not ordering the violent thug’s deportation and called on officials to review his case.

Pressuring

Speaking after the sentencing Mrs Hussain, who has filed for divorce, said: “There are so many reasons why he should be deported.

“He is an asylum seeker but went out of the country last year. How can they let an asylum seeker go there, come back and continue as normal?”

She explained the pair met on Facebook in 2013 when his asylum status had not been granted.

The following year, she said, Akram started pressuring her to enter into a civil partnership, ready for the tribunal. The pair wed in 2015.

“In May 2015 his tribunal came, I went there and helped him with it. He presented me as his wife... so it looked good.” The court heard how Akram, from Cardiff, treated his prisoner in her own home.

She was forbidden from leaving the house alone, owning a phone or accessing the internet.

Months of abuse culminated in the hammer attack.

Prosecuting, Stephen Donoghue said: “He was expecting her to have made him food.

“He completely lost his temper and started to talk about teaching her a lesson, how to be a good wife. He then picked up one of the hammers and began hitting her.”

Mrs Hussain told how she escaped after saying she needed to feed the electricity meter. She pleaded with three girls for help, who hid her in a doorway and called police. wife as a
