David Beckham film actor? Shame it wasn’t his knight

- By Mark Reynolds

HE was an undoubted talent on the football field but when it comes to acting some David Beckham fans were crying foul yesterday.

The former Manchester United star and England captain was savaged after clips of his first movie role were released.

Taking to social media, film buffs said Beckham’s performance as a knight in a trailer for King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword was “cringeworthy”.

Beckham, 42, is making his silver screen debut in his friend Guy Ritchie’s highly anticipated summer blockbuster in which he stars alongside real actors Charlie Hunnam and Eric Bana.

The film had its European premiere in London’s West End last night. But some fans are less than impressed with his portrayal of disgruntled knight Trigger.

In a trailer clip, Beckham responds to King Arthur about his attempts to pull the sword, Excalibur, out of the stone.

The King asks: “Where do you want me?”

Answering with his distinctive London accent, the sports star replies: “Bouncing on my knee? Where do you think I want you?”

The exchange drew derision from armchair critics on social media. One wrote: “This is the worst piece of acting I have had the misfortune to witness.”

Another said: “Just heard a clip of David Beckham in the new King Arthur film. Oh, God it’s cringe.”

A Twitter user wrote: “Pray for King Arthur! David Beckham can’t even save the film. Guy Ritchie has not made a good film since Snatch.” They then added: “I think David Beckham’s cameo in King Arthur kind of put me off watching it.”

Another tweeted: “The only thing I took away from King Arthur is that David Beckham can’t act. I think I already knew that.”

Some sprang to the star’s defence. One wrote: “Was there much wrong with David Beckham in the King Arthur clip? If it was anybody else, would they get ridiculed? Nope.”
