Miracle boy Blue, 8, beats deadly cancer

- By Mark Reynolds

A LITTLE boy was yesterday declared medically cured of cancer in what doctors described as a “miracle”.

Blue Tobin, eight, was diagnosed with a deadly form of leukaemia at the age of two.

But after undergoing a pioneering form of chemotherapy he was yesterday declared cancerfree and rang the bell at the hospital where he was treated to joyfully tell the world he is now clear of the disease.

Medics say the remarkable success of Blue’s treatment has paved the way for saving the lives of countless other children.

Accompanied by his mother Francesca Waite, a beaming Blue yesterday met the doctors who treated him at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, south London.

He said: “I feel great. I love singing now and want to be better than Bruno Mars.

“I love football too and Chelsea is my team.”

Francesca, 51, said: “They were convinced he was not going to make it. They can’t understand how he did make it. In the end the doctors were sitting there just staring at him saying, ‘The boy’s a miracle’.”

Blue, from Dover in Kent, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. He was given odds of 10-1 against him beating the disease.

After two failed bouts of chemotherapy, medics were ready to give up on the youngster and it was thought only a miracle would see him make a full recovery.

But doctors then drew up a unique dosage of medicine normally reserved for adults.

The toddler’s mother was told there was a high risk the drugs would kill him.

Dr Mike Potter, consultant haematologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It’s not often we need to use these drugs on children but thanks to Blue they can be an option in someone we think will need a transplant.”
