Just don’t add up says May

-

up and they cannot be trusted. And we have learned that Jeremy Corbyn simply cannot lead.”

Labour candidates were trying to distance themselves from their leader.

But a vote for anyone but the Tories would help make him Prime Minister, she warned. Directly appealing to former Labour voters’ she said she respected the loyalty that generations of people had given the party because they believed it shared their values.

But Labour now, under Jeremy Corbyn, had deserted them.

Mrs May added: “Across the country, traditional Labour supporters are increasingly looking at what Jeremy Corbyn believes in and are appalled.

“Labour voters are appalled because they see a leader who can’t lead, a shadow chancellor in John McDonnell who can’t be trusted and a shadow home secretary like Diane Abbott who can’t add up.”

Labour’s “shambolic” agenda would mean more debt, fewer jobs, higher taxes and a weaker Brexit negotiating position.

Disaster

Labour was not up to the job of making a success of Brexit talks, she stressed.

The rest of the EU was hardening its stance and acting in concert: “We have seen that they mean business. But so do I.”

Labour’s shadow cabinet member Jon Trickett hit back.

He said: “It’s the Tories who would be a disaster for Britain. The consequences of five more years of them in government are stark.

“It would mean five more years of putting the few before the many; of the NHS being run into the ground; of extreme cuts to our public services; of young people being let down.”

Meanwhile, Mrs May unveiled the Conservatives’ campaign “battle bus” – which turned out to the same vehicle used by the ill-fated Remain campaign during last year’s Brexit referendum.

Its new livery underlines how the party has made her central to its election pitch.

The bus is emblazoned in huge letters Theresa May: For Britain, with the word Conservatives only a tiny logo by the door.

It is in stark contrast to Labour’s vehicle, which highlights the party’s name but does not feature Mr Corbyn at all.
