DAY & NIGHT: PAGES 24 & 25

-

AFTER hearing the very sad news that Sir Roger Moore died on Tuesday, Day & Night thought it only fitting that we shared some of our favourite quotes from the man himself.

Often with tongue in cheek and always with a raised eyebrow the seven-time James Bond could be relied upon to provide some humorous words of wisdom on just about any subject.

Offering advice to fellow thesps he said: “As an insecure actor you learn never to ask people what they think about your work – far better to just imagine they all love you.” He also revealed that when at home in Monte Carlo he drove a Smart car – and some people just couldn’t get used to him not driving an Aston Martin or a Lotus. As a friend once said to him after they’d left a restaurant following lunch: “You got in and there were a couple of oiks who said, ‘What’s James Bond doing in a can of baked beans?’”

He also made light of having no siblings, once stating: “I was an only child as my parents realised they had achieved perfection first time.”

On a similar theme he said he would have loved to play film roles other than the handsome hero but he was simply too good looking: “I was too smooth. Before time rolled its evil tracks across my gob.” Poking fun at everything including himself extended to his reasoning behind his Bond departure: “My bank manager and agent said I should have done another Bond but they couldn’t find leading ladies old enough to play against me.” Although he did admit to not being averse to a part in the more recent films, saying: “I’d obviously need a double for all my action scenes, such as getting out of the chair, but I’m quite prepared to do all my own love scenes if that helps swing it.” The normally mild-mannered star, though, had a very direct answer when questioned as to what was the single most difficult moment during filming? His response focused solely on his A View To A Kill co-star, offering just two words: “Grace Jones.”
