- By John Ingham Defence Editor

THE Manchester concert massacre is the worst terror attack in Britain since Islamist suicide bombers murdered 52 people on Underground trains and a bus in London in July 2005.

However, in the last half a century Britain has been no stranger to terror attacks: March 22, 2017: Five people were killed by Islamist extremist Khalid Masood around the Houses of Parliament. Masood mowed down US tourist Kurt Cochran, Romanian tourist Andreea Cristea and Britons Aysha Frade and Leslie Rhodes on Westminster Bridge before stabbing PC Keith Palmer. He was shot dead by police. June 16, 2016: Labour MP Jo Cox was shot and stabbed to death outside her constituency office in Batley, West Yorks. Right-wing extremist Thomas Mair was given a whole-life sentence. May 22, 2013: Fusilier Lee Rigby was murdered by Islamist extremists Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale near his barracks in Woolwich, London. Both were jailed for life. June 30, 2007: Two Islamist extremists rammed a 4x4 laden with petrol and propane tanks into the main terminal of Glasgow Airport. One of the attackers died and five people were injured. July 21, 2005: Four attempted bomb attacks disrupted London but there was only one minor injury. Four terrorists were given life. July 7, 2005: Four suicide bombers killed 52 and injured more than 700 in blasts during London’s morning rush hour. June 15, 1996: A 3,300lb IRA bomb at Manchester’s Arndale shopping centre injured more than 200 and caused £700m of damage. March 20, 1993: Two children were killed by an IRA bomb in Warrington. September 22, 1989: An IRA bomb killed 11 Marines at their barracks in Deal, Kent. December 21, 1988: A bomb on Pan Am flight 103 killed 260 when it exploded over Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway. In 2001 a Libyan spy was jailed for the attack. October 12, 1984: The Brighton bombing by the IRA killed five and wounded 31 at the Tory party conference but missed its main target, prime minister Margaret Thatcher. November 21, 1974: IRA bombs in two Birmingham pubs killed 21 and injured 182. October 5, 1974: Five were killed by IRA bombs at two pubs in Guildford, Surrey.
