Revealed: Photos of the bomb remnants
PICTURES of parts of the shrapnel-packed bomb used to murder 22 innocent people were published in America yesterday after a leak of secret British intelligence.
They show a blood-stained tube-like detonator believed to have been in the left hand of bomber Salman Abedi. Another photograph shows shreds of fabric from a blue Karrimor backpack and possibly parts of a black vest.
The items are thought to have carried the powerful explosive in a lightweight metal container.
The pictures show that the bomb was powered by a £15 Yuasa 12 volt battery designed to run emergency lighting, while the detonator was unusual as it had a small circuit board soldered to it. Experts said the bomb was more sophisticated than other suicide devices, suggesting a skilled Islamic State bomb-maker was behind the attack.
Other images show nuts and screws that penetrated metal doors and left bullet-sized holes in walls.
Highly sensitive crime scene photographs were shared with US intelligence agencies by British investigators but photographs were leaked to the New York Times.
Its website reported that most of the deaths were in a circle around 22-year-old Abedi. The blast was said to have hurled his upper body out of the foyer at Manchester Arena as concert-goers headed home.
The leak, which also saw the bomber named in US media, provoked a sharp response from Home Secretary Amber Rudd.
