We stuff £1.5bn in piggy bank

- By Robert Kellaway

HOARDING Britons have £1.5billion tucked away in piggy banks or coin jars, a survey has found.

Nearly 36 million regularly set aside loose change, with the average stash amounting to £43.70.

However, just 26.9 million make regular savings into a bank or building society account.

Over half (58 per cent) of those quizzed said they preferred to save their money at home while 53 per cent did not like carrying coins about. One in four keeps a penny jar for treats.

Matt Sanders from GoCompare Money, which commissioned the poll, said: “While we might be moving closer to a cashless society, it seems the humble piggy bank is still a favourite for many people.”
