Thriller: Paula, 9pm, BBC2

As soon as Olivier award-winning actress Denise Gough (left) was cast in the title role of this revenge thriller the makers were on to a winner. She is outstanding as chemistry teacher Paula in this gripping three-part tale. A rat problem prompts her to contact odd-job man James but when he arrives the pair cannot contain their animalistic attraction to each other and end up having a one-night stand. The tagline for the show is “Be careful who you let in” and Paula is soon left to rue the day she ever opened the door to the new man in her life. Nothing is as it seems with James and when he finds out she has been having an affair, he resorts to blackmail – the start of a deadly game of cat and mouse.
