SOMETIMES you just don’t know what to with yourself. Or more specifically, you don’t know what to do with your feelings. When trauma happens our brains can go off in countless directions like a bag of ball bearings dropped on a marble floor. Panic, blame, anger, grief, sorrow, lock-down, rage or benign numbness as we struggle to make sense of an unbelievable truth.

There is no blueprint for life but we do know when things are so wrong it makes us draw deep into ourselves to find answers and a way of understanding that we can live with. Yes our thoughts go out to the people of Manchester who lost loved ones and we keep them in our hearts.

Some people take to social media to let off a pressure valve of fury or empathy or merely to read the thoughts of others that may in some way reflect their own. All grief and shock is personal and we each have different ways of processing dreadful news.

So a few thoughts and tips for those who are feeling fear, are anxious and worried about life and who just don’t know what to do for the best:

Find time to sit quietly somewhere peaceful at home or on a park bench and allow your thoughts to just drift by. Don’t judge them, just let them be like carriages of a great train passing through and let them go.

Actively seek beauty and good in passing moments and express gratitude for the small things in your day. Top yourself up with beauty, nature and music and fortify yourself with positive actions.

Say a prayer, even if you are not religious. Send love, support, healing vibes, hope and good wishes to those who need it. Send the same to yourself too.

Be kind to yourself and that means stop rushing, forcing and pushing yourself so much. Be sure to know why you are working so hard. Work within your values and check in on what really gives your life meaning and purpose.

Write it out or talk to someone kind who will understand.

Express love and gratitude to those you love and who are significant in your life. Pass kindness on.

Live in the now and put this time in perspective. There is always fear and uncertainty in life but peace and hope always triumph.

Even this shall pass.
