Brook’s fear over his sight

- Chris McKenna

KELL BROOK is facing another eye operation to save his career.

The Sheffield welterweight insists he will be back after losing his IBF belt to American Errol Spence jnr in the 11th round at Bramall Lane on Saturday night.

But Brook’s left eye socket was fractured and he now faces gruelling surgery to repair it – months after he had the same operation on his right eye socket after defeat by Gennady Golovkin last September.

Brook, right, admitted: “The eye is broken again. I need surgery. I’m devastated.

“I remember the surgeon saying if I’d gone another round against Golovkin I could have been blinded.

“I had that going through my mind in the 11th round. I ended up thinking I live to fight another day.”

His promoter Eddie Hearn insisted: “The injury is the only doubt over his future but I don’t JENSON BUTTON’S one-off appearance at Monaco following Fernando Alonso’s participation in the Indianapolis 500 provided the biggest incident of the race – after he flipped Pascal Wehrlein’s Sauber following an overexuberant overtaking manoeuvre.

Despite Wehrlein’s car resting precariously on the barriers, the German escaped injury. Button failed to finish following damage sustained in the incident and was later hit with a three-place grid penalty.

Wehrlein said: “It was just scary. The brakes started to smoke and I couldn’t get out of the car. Button was nowhere. Clearly this corner is no place to overtake, it was a silly move.”

Alonso’s one-off attempt at the Indy 500 also ended in disappointment when his Honda engine let him down in the 179th lap. Alonso performed impressively on his debut and had been in seventh place at the time.
