Conservatives know all votes are crucial

-

AN owner who inadvertently left three dogs to die in a closed car on a hot day has joined forces with the RSPCA to promote awareness of the danger to pets from leaving them even in overcast and shady conditions. In a separate incident a man in Ireland left his baby on the back seat of his car when he forgot

FOR the first time in my entire life I cheered a Lib Dem poster when I spotted it over the weekend. No, it was not out of sympathy for the candidature thus advertised nor out of any respect for a party which has so hopelessly lost its way but rather because that was the first opposition poster I had seen in a drive of 105 miles!

The route, which took me through territory in which the Lib Dems normally put up a strong fight, was positively festooned with Conservative posters (incidentally, whoever runs Oliver Letwin’s poster campaign should be given a medal by the Conservative high command) unchallenged by any orange or red ones. Then suddenly there it was: a small Lib Dem poster peeping apologetically out of some foliage, drawing from me an ironic cheer.

The polls of course are now indicating that the outcome of this election is no longer so certain but if willingness to advertise voting intentions is anything to go by, Mrs May has little to worry about. Indeed she should be grateful that the polls have narrowed because that means her supporters will be galvanised to go out and vote instead of thinking it won’t make any difference to a guaranteed outcome.

Yes, the elderly are cross but our generation is also sensible. We know that what is promised has to be paid for and that the wild programme of Corbyn promising the end of tuition fees, 10,000 more police, free childcare and buying back nine water companies to name but just a few commitments is unaffordable and that the penal tax programme he proposes will drive enterprise out of the country just when we most need it.

In the aftermath of the Manchester atrocity, the man who wants to be prime minister will still not condemn IRA terrorism or repudiate other groups which he has refused to condemn in the past. It is an unsafe world IN THE war of the dresses Melania Trump beat Brigitte Macron hands down but why is it now the custom to see the wives of politicians simply as clothes horses? Jackie Kennedy was also elegant but there was plenty of commentary on her brains as well. When Mrs Thatcher met President Reagan the media did not reduce the occasion to a competition between Margaret’s and Nancy’s outfits. With whom did Norma Major or Mary Wilson ever compete? No wonder Angela Merkel always dresses frumpily. It ensures that the world listens to what she has to say rather than gawping at her knees and ankles. and to drop her off on his way to work. She too died.

There has been nothing but sympathy for the distraught father but the man who let his dogs die was prosecuted, given a suspended jail sentence and banned from keeping pets for 10 years. He appears on the RSPCA video in Corbyn’s ambivalent attitude towards those who unleash mayhem against innocent victims can hardly reassure the public.

As for the Lib Dems, I spoke to one former supporter in Bournemouth last Saturday. She told me she had

tears for his animals a year after the incident. Clearly he is an animal lover and has more than learned a painful lesson, so why the harshness of a 10-year ban, given that he has a life sentence of guilt? If the RSPCA had any sense of justice it would go back to court and ask for the ban to be lifted now. always voted for them but would not now do so because she believed their commitment to a second referendum would plunge the country into uncertainty and chaos. Quite right, madam.

There can be little doubt that only one of the party leaders commands confidence as a future prime minister. The electorate may now be sending her a rude message about her social care plans but on the day itself voters are unlikely to risk Comrade Corbyn in Number 10.
