Labour could win ‘propped up’ by rival parties

- By Alison Little

LABOUR will try to grab power with a coalition of minor parties, shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry admitted yesterday.

She fuelled fears of a “coalition of chaos” after saying Labour could be propped up by others in the event of a hung Parliament.

Prime Minister Theresa May has long warned that voting Labour on Thursday risks putting a coalition in charge.

Jeremy Corbyn would be Prime Minister, propped up by the Scottish National Party and Liberal Democrats, it has been suggested. Yesterday Ms Thornberry helped fuel fears during a question and answer session with Mr Corbyn in Basildon, Essex.

After a question about the prospect of working with other parties, she surprised Mr Corbyn by taking the microphone and said: “If we end up in a position where we are in a minority, we will go ahead and we will put forward a Queen’s Speech and a Budget.

“And if people want to vote for it, then good. And if they don’t want to vote for it, they are going to have to go back and speak to their constituents and explain to them why it is that we have a Tory government instead.” After the intervention, during which the Labour leader looked worried, Mr Corbyn refused to be drawn on coalitions, adding: “We’re fighting this election to win.”

Tory party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin said yesterday: “Jeremy Corbyn will invite other parties to prop him up if there is a hung Parliament. Brexit negotiations start 11 days after you vote but, instead of focusing on those, Corbyn would be busy haggling with Nicola Sturgeon and Lib Dems. That would cause chaos.”
