Fears of secret bid to ditch Brexit

- By David Maddox

NEW fears have been raised that Jeremy Corbyn is planning to ditch Brexit if he wins power after he appointed an arch Remainer to a top job on his front bench.

Lyn Brown is now shadow home secretary after gaffe-prone Diane Abbott was relieved of her duties for health reasons.

Ms Brown, MP for West Ham, was one of a group of 47 hardcore remain Labour MPs who refused to back Article 50 to start the Brexit process.

The promotion of such an uncompromising pro-EU figure follows revelations by the Daily Express that European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker and his Brussels cronies want Mr Corbyn to win the election because they believe he will undo the Brexit vote. Labour has insisted it will abide by the referendum result. However, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has warned that Mr Corbyn is likely to need SNP and Lib Dem support to get into Downing Street.

Both Scottish Nationalist leader Nicola Sturgeon and Lib Dem leader Tim Farron have made it clear they want the Brexit result reversed with another vote.

Tory MEP David Campbell Bannerman, of pro-Brexit campaign group Leave Means Leave, said: “The fact he is prepared to promote a person like Lyn Brown who has no respect for the democratic will of the British people and refused to vote for Article 50 shows that Brexit is not safe in Corbyn’s hands.”
