Only Mrs May can provide the leadership we need

TODAY the people of Britain will choose their next government. For the sake of the country, the Brexit process, our economy and our safety, this newspaper sincerely implores you, when it is your turn to put a cross on the ballot paper, to back the Conservatives and Theresa May.

Anything other than a victory for the Tories would throw the entire Brexit process into doubt.

It is only Mrs May who can prevent Jeremy Corbyn, with the help of the SNP and the Lib Dems, from overriding the referendum result and keeping us in this doomed bloc.

This is why this newspaper believes Ukip supporters would be best served, if only for this election, by backing the Tories and making sure that Mrs May gets a large enough majority to ensure that the process of leaving the EU cannot be derailed.

While Brexit is the biggest task facing the nation, it is not the only issue on which we require the reliable leadership that Mrs May provides.

Now would be the worst possible time to put novices in charge of our security, our military and our counter-terror operations.

Nor is it a sensible moment to indulge in Labour’s free-for-all spending plans. The state of the global economy is far from encouraging and we need a government capable of maintaining economic confidence and of managing the public finances wisely.

Since taking office, the Prime Minister has shown that she is more than capable of doing what is an incredibly demanding job. She deserves our support.
