- By Chris Riches

A WOMAN accused of murdering a commuter by pushing him into the path of a tram sobbed on her first court appearance yesterday.

Charrissa Loren BrownWellington, 31, is charged with murdering Philip Carter, pictured below, who died at Manchester’s Victoria station on Sunday evening.

She appeared before Manchester and Salford magistrates in a red jumper and grey tracksuit bottoms.

The alleged victim was named in court as Mr Carter, 30, though he has yet to be formally identified by police.

Emergency services were called to the station at about 7.50pm. Mr Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Greater Manchester Police allege he was pushed from a platform into the path of a tram.

Prosecutor Tess Kenyon said the allegation was so serious it could not be dealt with at the lower court.

Brown-Wellington was remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Court later today. Speaking after the tragedy, Stephen Rhodes, of Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “I’m devastated to hear someone has died.

“My immediate thoughts are with this person’s family and friends.”

Victoria station had just reopened after the neighbouring Manchester Arena blast – unleashed by terrorist Salman Abedi, 22 – had caused major damage.

The tragedy on May 22 killed 22 people, injuring 119. Abedi also perished in his suicide explosion.
