George Medal for PC who confronted jihadi
HERO police officer Keith Palmer is posthumously honoured today for his response during the Westminster terror attack.
PC Palmer, 48, was stabbed to death when he confronted attacker Khalid Masood outside the Houses of Parliament in March.
He will be awarded a George Medal for bravery in the Queen’s civilian gallantry list.
The same honour goes to pensioner Bernard Kenny, 78, who was seriously injured when he tried to stop extremist Thomas Mair from murdering MP Jo Cox in Birstall, West Yorkshire, a year ago.
Last night Metropolitan Police commissioner Cressida Dick said: “Keith acted that day with no thought for his own safety, intent simply on doing his job and protecting members of the public and Parliament. He paid the ultimate price for his selfless actions.
“I know that I speak on behalf of all of my officers and staff when I say how immensely proud we all are that PC Palmer is to receive posthumously the George Medal for bravery. It is an honour that could not be more deserved and I know it will mean a great deal to all those who knew and loved him.” PC Palmer’s citation said that his bravery “unquestionably saved lives”.
