Flammable cladding was banned in US
GRENFELL Tower was fitted with cladding that is banned in the US because it is flammable as part of a cut-price refurbishment, it emerged yesterday.
Building subcontractor Harley Facades covered the apartment block with a type of aluminium panel which was £2 per square metre cheaper than a fire-resistant alternative.
One estimate suggests that 87 tower blocks are covered in the same cladding.
Labour MP David Lammy has demanded a “corporate manslaughter” investigation.
Lib Dem MP Tom Brake said: “It seems people’s homes were turned into death traps because they were fitted on the cheap.”
