Heatwave could melt roads
“Heat raises the prospect of softening roads. The signs are patches that look blacker than usual.
“When the air temperature hits 86F and the sun is out, road temperature can reach 122F and surfaces can become sticky.
“Drivers shouldn’t be surprised to see gritting trucks out as salt can improve skid resistance.”
Malcolm Booth, from the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners, urged people to keep an eye on elderly friends and neighbours.
He said: “Drink plenty even if you don’t feel thirsty, cover up with loose clothing, avoid going outside during hottest parts of the day and seek shade where possible.

Today could beat the previous 91F record for June 19, which was set in Southampton in 1893.
“Feel-like” temperatures could hit 100F in the South and 90F in central England. There could also be thunderstorms later this week.
