Community spirit shines through after tower blaze
IT was heart-wrenching to see the tragic plight of those trapped in Grenfell Tower and heartening to see the community spirit of ordinary people who helped in their hour of need (“Over 100 now feared dead”, June 16).
It’s a pity our self-promoting politicians, senior civil servants and local government officials don’t share the same spirit. But how many of them live in tower blocks?
These individuals, who over a long period decided to do little or nothing about the safety concerns of those who live in high-rise buildings, will no doubt be concentrating all their efforts to remain faceless as we learn more about the causes of this terrible incident.
A lack of funding will no doubt be a major factor when they roll out the excuses. Cuts and the high costs of making these buildings safe to live in will be blamed but if foreign aid was cut it could be done.
There must be no compromise where public safety is concerned, whatever the costs. Trevor Turner, Telford, Shrops
