Classic victory the highlight abroad

- Patrick Weaver

THE more the pound tumbles, the more UK-trained horses that seek euros and dollars.

There have been more horses chasing foreign earnings this year than last following the pound’s 12 per cent devaluation. In recent weeks Nicky Henderson, George Baker and Stan Moore have won races in Paris. Yesterday Hugo Palmer won the German 1,000 Guineas with Unforgetable Filly – Cristal Fizz paying for her journey to Dusseldorf by finishing fifth.

James Doyle had his mount in fifth place round the turn into the straight and got an immediate response when he asked her for a turn of foot after turning for home.

Unforgetable Filly won going away by two lengths to give Palmer and Doyle their second successive success in the fillies’ Classic. They won it with Hawksmoor last June.

Harry Dunlop won Saturday’s Group Three feature at Chantilly with Robin Of Navan. It was no less than his stable star deserved as he had come close to winning the Prix d’Ispahan – a Group One – on his previous start.

“It’s great to see him win after running such a super race the other day,” said Dunlop.

“He’s changed my life really because I knew nothing about French racing three years ago and he’s been a superstar. Excitingly, Cristian (Demuro, his rider) said he thinks he can go a mile and a half, which opens up many more options.”

Harry’s brother, Ed, came within a whisker of winning a Listed race at Le Lion d’Angers with Capricious Cantor yesterday, which is more than can be said of Shutter Speed and Rhododendron in the French Oaks.

Frankie Dettori’s mount looked like finishing second at one point in the home straight but lost that position on the run to the line and came fourth. Rhododendron was pulled up by Ryan Moore and later discovered to have bled internally.
