Militant mob clashes with police outside Downing St

- By David Pilditch

FAR-LEFT protesters accused of exploiting the anguish of victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster clashed with police outside Downing Street yesterday.

The militants marched after a call to bring down the Government.

Scotland Yard feared thousands would answer the rallying cry. Fewer than 500 did so but there were angry scenes nevertheless.

A man who screamed in the face of an officer was detained. Another was pinned to the ground by police and as he was carried away he repeatedly shouted he was a “peaceful” protester.

The clashes came despite pleas of victims’ families who said their grief was being hijacked. Marxist group Movement For Justice By Any Means Necessary said the disaster was reason to spark mayhem.

It had declared on social media that there was a “class war” being waged by the Government and “there will be no peace until this Government is brought down”.

Volunteer Paul Nelson, 33, who has been helping homeless victims clashed with protesters as the march set off.

He said: “It’s politicising the anger. Now is not the time. They are not offering to find mattresses. They are running around saying how can we get Jeremy Corbyn in.”
