BRITAIN’S record heatwave ended yesterday with violent thunderstorms and cooler temperatures.

Torrential downpours and lightning battered eastern parts of the country as the mercury plunged from scorching mid-week levels.

Experts now predict a return to more usual conditions for the time of year this weekend and for the rest of the month.

The South will hover around the 75F (24C) mark over the next few days with Scotland and the North seeing temperature of about 65F.

The change comes after a recordbreaking heatwave saw temperatures reach 94F on Wednesday – the hottest summer solstice on record.

It saw lightning strike the TV aerial of a family home in East Boldon, just north of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. No one was injured during the incident

Heavy downpours hit parts of the South-east yesterday morning before rain swept the North-east. Almost 3,000 lightning strikes were recorded along the east coast with flood alerts issued for the worst-hit regions.

The Met Office said the outlook for the next few days is for a mixture of sunshine, showers and average temperatures. Forecaster Oli Clayton said: “Temperatures broadly across the UK have dropped about 20F since Wednesday. Going forward it is gong to be fresher over the next few days.

“Heavy rain is forecast in the far north today.

“Behind this a cold front will move across the country. There will also be gusty conditions further north.

“The weekend is looking more changeable with a mixture of sunshine and showers.”

The outlook for the rest of June and the start of July is for cooler and at times more unsettled conditions.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden said: “The remainder of this month will see a switch to cooler temperatures, particularly for the northern half of the country.

“However, it will still feel pleasant in the sunshine and temperatures will hover nearer average for the time of the year. Southern regions will remain warm with temperatures staying in the low to mid-70s.

“There will also be some vigorous thunderstorm activity.

“These storms may be accompanied by some hefty hail showers and flashflooding from high rainfall.” very came home and said it was unbearably hot at school.
