Grab that brolly! Summer is on hold for 2 weeks

- By Nathan Rao

SUMMER is back on hold for a fortnight of chilly temperatures, rain and “dreary” weather.

Heavy and persistent downpours will set in this week with more than an inch of rain in parts threatening travel.

Severe weather warnings are likely in Scotland and northern England.

Met Office forecaster Emma Salter said last night: “This week is going to be a real contrast to the recent hot weather, we are now looking at a totally different story.

“Rain will set in on Tuesday across parts of England and Scotland and there will probably be warnings issued as showers could be heavy and persistent.

“It is looking unsettled and changeable this week and probably through the next as low pressure influences our weather.

“It is a return to the typical, and at times pretty dreary, British summer.”

She said that thermometers will drop over the next few days with just the Southeast hanging on to warmer conditions.

She added: “Temperatures will return to average; around the mid-70Fs in the South and cooler elsewhere.

“However, with between three-quarters and one and a half inches of rain forecast, there will probably be some disruption to travel.” In typical British fashion, the glorious Mediterraneanstyle weather vanished as the school holidays began.

The outlook comes just days after the country baked in near-record temperatures – 94.1F was recorded at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Last week brought the longest June heatwave since 1976 which peaked with the hottest summer solstice on record on Wednesday.

Pleasant

The next few days will be closer to average – between 59F and 63F in the North.

However all is not lost further ahead according to some experts.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “It will still feel pleasant in the sunshine and temperatures will be nearer average.

“There will be some passing and potentially vigorous thunderstorms, these may be accompanied by some hefty hail showers and flash-flooding.

“As we head into July a more mixed and cooler pattern is likely but there is still the potential for hotter weather towards the latter part of the month.”
