Senior MP boycotts ‘anti-Tory’ Channel 4

PM enjoys day out at the regatta

-

A BID by former Chancellor George Osborne to scrap copper coins was vetoed by David Cameron.

The ex-Prime Minister is believed to have thought ditching 1p and 2p coins would “damage” the Tories.

The 2015 proposal from an adviser was part of plans to phase out cash by 2020.

Mr Osborne argued for the THERESA May took some much-needed time away from politics to enjoy a day out on the banks of the Thames at Henley Royal Regatta yesterday.

Accompanied by her husband Philip, the Prime Minister was led into the Stewards’ enclosure as crowds of revellers arrived to enjoy the rowing races.

Her cream dress and coat with navy roses evidently met with the approval of the famously eagle-eyed Stewards who enforce the stringent below-the-knee dress code.

Mrs May is a regular at the regatta, which takes place on the borders of her Maidenhead parliamentary constituency.

And she would have been able to enjoy a welcome break from the humdrum of Government communications because the use of mobile phones within the enclosure is not allowed.

The Prime Minister was later spotted seated next to Olympic rowing legends Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent.

“modernising change”, that would have mirrored his scrapping of the vehicle licence disc.

Instead of relying on plastic, the UK has brought in a new pound coin and kept smaller value coins.

A Downing Street spokeswoman this week confirmed that Mrs May also has “no plans” to move to a cashless society. A SENIOR Tory MP has boycotted Channel 4 News, saying he “couldn’t be sure” of its impartiality because of presenter Jon Snow’s alleged “bias”.

Former Conservative Party chairman Grant Shapps tweeted: “Text from @Channel4News asking if I’d go on tonight. Text back from me declining, explaining I couldn’t be sure about interview impartiality.”

His comment came after Jon Snow was alleged to have joined in with a chant of “**** the Tories” while dancing with students at Glastonbury earlier this month.

A photograph of a smiling Mr Snow posing with a group of revellers was shared by festival-goer Daniel Millea on Twitter earlier this week.

Boogie

He wrote: “Having a dance with Jon Snow and hearing him shout **** the Tories is what dreams are made of. Had a good little boogie with him and a good laugh, walked off and he sarcastically said he’s a neutral hahaha.”

Mr Snow later claimed he had “no recollection” of saying such a thing, suggesting he took more than 1,000 selfies that day.

Earlier this week, Mr Snow, 69, was said to be “riled” after a right-wing think-tank’s spokesman told him: “Not everyone hates the Tories as much as you do.”

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen said Mr Snow should “either resign” or “be sacked” and said he had displayed “extreme views”.

“I think it’s time Channel 4 told Jon Snow where to go. Everyone has political views. However, to espouse them in such a way and so publicly, his position is untenable,” he added.
