Aidan wants the last laugh

- Nigel Clarke

ONE Scottish actor exited the grand theatre of Wimbledon yesterday, but another remained with the promise of joining him on centre stage.

Aidan McHugh, just 17, is looking impressive in the boys’ singles.

His chief claim to fame is that he is pals with the fallen champion and hits with him in practice, but that could soon change.

Yesterday, McHugh won well against Marco Miladinovic of Serbia, finishing off a raininterrupted match 6-0, 7-6.

Like Murray, McHugh is from the suburbs of Glasgow. Four times over the past couple of weeks he has prepared with the world No1, admitting he does not find that as much of an ordeal as the wind-up he faces from his fellow Scot.

He has even been known to dodge school to enjoy the chance of a hit with his hero and said: “He has texted me after my wins, but I also have to put up with his mickey-taking.

“He just picks on a weakness and goes for it.

“For instance, I had to go and get some suncream the other day because, to be fair, we don’t get a lot of it in Scotland, and I never heard the last of that.

“Then a ball boy was unwell on my court and Andy was on to that as well.”

Even Ivan Lendl, Murray’s coach, chips in, and McHugh added: “It’s great. It makes me feel I’m part of the training camp. They don’t let up.”

The kid might have words of his own if he can lift a title that has been the launch pad for so many careers.

He faces Matteo Martineau of France in the third round today.
