Now Jamie will mix it with Watson

- Tony Banks

JAMIE MURRAY is on course to win the Wimbledon mixed doubles title again – just as he did in 2007 when, bizarrely, Roger Federer won the men’s title and Venus Williams the women’s.

And for the fifth time in the last six years there will be a Murray in a Wimbledon final.

And it will be an all-British final on Sunday, with defending champions Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen beating Bruno Soares and Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

Murray and Martina Hingis beat Marcelo Demolina and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2, 7-5 watched by mum Judy Murray on Centre Court.

In 2007, Murray won with Jelena Jankovic. And he and Hingis were always in control.

Murray said: “It’s good news for us that there is another Murray in a final – I hope it continues. It’s good to be back in the final. We played some amazing tennis. We’re excited.

“We know both of them well, Henri hits the ball so hard so he is very difficult to play against and Heather is a really good doubles player. It is going to be a tough match but then it is going to be tough for them as well.”

Murray added: “I’ve got a lot more experience under my belt than I had in 2007. I have played a lot of big matches since. We are confident. We are a good team.”

Hingis, who hit the winning shot with a ferocious backhand, only teamed up with Murray a week before the tournament.

Murray said: “When Martina rang me and suggested we get together it was a suggestion I couldn’t turn down. I’m glad we did.”

Watson and Kontinen won their first set but then missed a match point and their contest went into a tie-break in the second set.

They lost it and it was a setback that could have derailed the pair, but they got themselves together in the third set and Kontinen’s fierce serve proved the winning strike.
