Wolves turn heat up after Currie’s scare

WARRINGTON

BEN CURRIE gave Warrington an injury scare just one week after his long-awaited comeback from 10 months on the sidelines.

The highly rated second-rower had scored the winning try against Wigan on his return from a serious knee injury seven days earlier.

But he appeared to aggravate the problem last night and was withdrawn early in the second half in what Warrington described as a “precautionary measure”.

The 23-year-old had shown glimpses of his undoubted ability during the opening period, despite Widnes establishing a 6-4 lead.

Both sides had already been condemned to bottomfour finishes at the end of the regular season and a subsequent fight to avoid relegation in the Qualifiers.

Kevin Brown has underwhelmed since signing for Warrington from Widnes but his try on the hour mark set Wolves on their way to an eighth straight win over their Cheshire rivals.

Matty Russell put Warrington ahead early on when he collected Brown’s pass and touched down in the corner. Joe Mellor hit back for Widnes with a converted try, but Peta Hiku caught a crossfield kick from Declan Patton to score in clinical fashion for Wolves after the break.

Brown then grounded another clever kick from Patton before Russell’s second try finished Widnes off.
