Don’t fall for it says Sampson

- TONY LEIGHTON

ENGLAND women’s boss Mark Sampson has admitted Spain may “fall over” to win decisions when the teams meet in Breda on Sunday.

After a stunning start to their Euro 2017 campaign in Holland, which saw them surpass the highest victory margin in the history of the event with a 6-0 win over Scotland, England are aiming to show it was no fluke.

But Sampson said: “We know we’ll have to produce a performance as good if not better on Sunday. It’s a difficult game. Spain will be different to Scotland. They’ll probably fall over a bit more. We need to be ready for that.” Striker Ellen White, below, said: “We’re excited right now but we can’t get too high. Spain beat Portugal in their first match so they’re going to be on a high as well. “It’s going to be an exciting game for us. They are a very technical team and it will be difficult – but we want to qualify top of our group.” CHAMPIONSHIP side Aston Villa have signed Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan in a deal which could rise to £2million. The 33-year-old’s two-year contract at Villa Park brings to an end his nine-year association with the Premier League Potters. “Now is the time for a new football adventure,” said Whelan, left. Villa have paid an initial £1.25m fee but that could rise to £2m with add-ons and clauses. ●SWANSEA have been given hope they can keep hold of Everton target Gylfi Sigurdsson after the Icelandic midfielder’s agent insisted he was going nowhere.
