MY PICK: Jordan is the one to beat ROYAL BIRKDALE suits Jordan Spieth so well that I can see him winning this year by multiple strokes, maybe even by four or five.
Hitting the green is key here. You can get in some difficult spots in close proximity to the putting surfaces.
A lot of the greens are in basins, the grass is also long on the banks and a lot of the bunkers are small – it’s even difficult to take a stance at times.
Spieth has figured all that out. I picked him from the start because Birkdale is a thinker’s course and he’s a thinker. These par-70 links are not about strength and power. The total yardage may only be 7,156 but it’s a true test.
