Web frenzy as Tom Jones (not that Tom) proposes
Tom Jones, the Welsh crooner who sang It’s Not Unusual, may have supplied inspiration for the younger Tom’s romantic gesture IT’S not unusual to be loved by anyone... but the magic moment a young man proposed to his girlfriend has become a social media hit.
The picture of Tom Jones kneeling in front of a delighted Beckii Heard was snapped by passer-by Annabell Parry.
The image went viral after she lost the couple’s contact details and turned to Facebook to track them down.
It has now been shared 24,000 times and drawn more than 500 comments. Tom, 27, and Beckii, 24, say they are “overwhelmed” by the public response.
Beckii said: “It has reached so many people, I really can’t believe it.”
Tom, namesake of the Welsh singer famous for the 1964 hit It’s Not Unusual, had planned to pop the question at the couple’s home in Chester.
But in the end he proposed on Sunday – just yards from The Cross in Chester where the pair met through mutual friends three years ago.
Beckii, a store supervisor, said: “Tom went down on one knee, I thought to tie his shoelaces, but he grabbed hold of me and pulled this ring out.
“My first words were, ‘Oh my God.’ He said, ‘Will you be my wife, will you marry me?’ and I said, ‘Of course, yes’.”
Retail worker Tom said: “We had people clapping and cheering which was great.
“It went from the original plan of just the two of us to a massive celebration.”
Annabell, who was hunting for Pokemon Go characters with her children when she spotted the pair, said she was amazed at the public reaction.
She said: “All I wanted was to give them a lovely photo of the moment.”
Tom added: “The picture is perfect.
“We’ll print it off and put it on the wall.”
