Head Abi’s tears as pupils serenade her down aisle

- By Chris Riches

A HEADTEACHER cried tears of joy on her wedding day as she was serenaded by 20 of her pupils in church as she walked down the aisle.

Abigail Wright, 33, who made headlines five years ago after becoming one of Britain’s youngest heads aged 28, was marrying her long-term sweetheart.

Bridegroom Lee Fielden, 40, said: “It was a very special day. It was a fantastic ceremony with so many friends and family.”

Twenty pupils in school uniform sang their own version of US R’n’B boyband All-4-One’s classic 2005 hit I Swear at St Thomas’ Church in Halliwell, Bolton.

Mrs Fielden has transformed St Thomas’ primary school since her arrival from one that required some improvement to receiving a “good with some outstanding features” rating at its most recent Ofsted inspection.

School manager Mary Holowaty said: “It was an absolutely perfect day for such a wonderful headteacher and she was a beautiful bride. It is unusual these days that a head gets married in a church that is attached to the school so it was great to see.”

She said: “As we are such a diverse community she has done a marvellous job bringing everyone together. We’ve gone from strength to strength since she took over.”

Lee was just pleased he could make the wedding after breaking his leg on his stag trip in Krakow.

He said: “I have just had a cast removed. I may have been in a bit of trouble if I wasn’t able to make my honeymoon.”
