School project joy for Clooneys

-

NOW that Brad and Angelina have split there’s plenty of room for another Hollywood pair to vie for the crown of premier power couple. Step forward George and Amal Clooney who are following in their predecessors’ humanitarian footsteps by opening seven schools for Syrian refugee children.

The high-profile husband and wife team, whose twins Ella and Alexander were born on June 2, have partnered with Google, Hewlett-Packard and UNICEF to donate more than £2million to fund education opportunities for 3,000 Syrians living in Lebanon – the new mum’s native country.

“They have been victims of geography and circumstance but that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope,” reads a statement from the Clooneys about the humanitarian crisis and civil war in Syria, which has left many of its citizens crossing into the neighbouring country of Lebanon to build new lives. “Our goal with this initiative is to help provide Syrian refugee children with an education.”

The Clooney Foundation for Justice was founded last year by the actor and his human rights barrister wife to “support equity in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world”.

Lebanon’s minister of education Marwan Hamadeh says: “The government of Lebanon is profoundly grateful to the leadership of George and Amal. We are delighted the Clooney Foundation has decided to support our efforts to open the doors of more public schools to ensure we can offer every child currently living in Lebanon a free education.”

The 56-year-old Oscar-winning actor, who is said to have his eye on his biggest role yet – President of the United States in 2020 – also has nine years of solo humanitarian work involvement as a high-profile United Nations Messenger of Peace.
