‘We’ll see best of Pogba’

- Richard Tanner

NEMANJA MATIC is set to make his debut for Manchester United tonight with Denis Irwin believing he can ‘unleash the Pog’.

Irwin, a member of United’s 1999 Treble-winning team, thinks Matic’s £40million arrival to fill the midfield anchor position will allow Paul Pogba to flourish in a freer role.

He believes Pogba is easily capable of a double-figure goals tally in the coming season. “Matic is a player United have needed for quite a while,” said Irwin. “Michael Carrick has done a fantastic job there but he is not getting any younger.

“They have needed midfielders for a while so it is good to see that, following Pogba’s arrival last summer, they’ve now got Matic.

“He’s experienced, he’s not an ‘all-singing, all-dancing’ player but he keeps it simple and does his job. He knows the Premier League, having won the title twice in the last three seasons at Chelsea, and he knows how Jose Mourinho wants him and the team to play.

“He’s also a signing designed to let Pogba off the leash a bit. In pre-season Pogba has looked good and has been given a free role.

“He scored nine last season but he hit the woodwork so many times.

“He is going to be a big player for United this season and will chip in with more goals. He should be capable of double figures.” ❑ A SHREWSBURY TOWN fans’ group has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £75,000 in order to install 550 rail seats at their New Meadow ground.

If successful, the League One club will become the first in England or Wales to bring a safe-standing section back to an all-seater ground.

Shrewsbury first revealed their interest in safe-standing at the end of June and yesterday’s initiative comes a day after Liverpool fans voted overwhelmingly in favour of bringing rail seats to Anfield.
