Davina McCall is encouraging fellow celebs to be open about their personal battles.
The TV presenter now believes honesty is indeed the best policy because of the public support and positive reaction she received after revealing her dark past. “I think everybody knows I’ve had my demons,” says the mum-of-three, 49. “Everybody knows that I’ve been on a journey. Were I not famous then I wouldn’t necessarily tell everyone but when I started doing TV I knew people would find out about my past so I thought it was better just to talk about it and be honest.
“You think people are going to hate you but when you are honest people respond to it so well. Society is very different now.”
Davina, host of Long Lost Family and The Jump, fronts a new eightpart discussion series in which she and various experts investigate issues such as mental health, stress, parenting, the pursuit of perfection, technology addiction and friendship.
“I came out about my drug thing 20 years ago and I was scared but because it had been a while since I’d used, people didn’t judge me. They saw me through different glasses – they knew it was an old part of my life,” she adds. “That’s been an eye opener and seeing how people react to brutal honesty has made me think I can be even more brutally honest.”
The Davina Hour begins on digital channel W on September 4.
