Trump vows ‘fire and fury’ at nuclear North Korea

- By John Ingham Defence Editor

PRESIDENT Trump last night said North Korea “will be met with fire and fury” if the rogue state threatens the US.

His warning came after American intelligence chiefs warned that Pyongyang has now developed nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The President told reporters at the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey: “North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.” Pressure had been growing on President Trump to act against North Korea.

Washington’s latest assessment said that Pyongyang has developed a miniaturised nuclear weapon that can fit on top of one of its missiles.

This would bring it close to becoming a fully-fledged nuclear power and could let it target mainland America.

Details emerged the day after North Korea vowed to give the US a “severe lesson” with its strategic nuclear force if the country takes military action against it. Last month it threatened a nuclear strike on “the heart of the US” if it tries to depose dictator Kim Jong-un.

President Trump has pledged that North Korea will not be allowed to pose a nuclear threat to the US.

The UN Security Council, including Kim’s ally China, voted unanimously to impose tough new sanctions against Kim’s regime. China told Kim to halt his tests of nuclear bombs and missiles. President Trump tweeted yesterday: “After many years of failure, countries are coming together to finally address the dangers posed by North Korea. We must be tough & decisive!”

North Korea has carried out five nuclear bomb tests since 2006 with two long-range missile launches last month.

But until the Defense Intelligence Agency’s confidential report, most experts had thought Pyongyang lacked the capability to combine a nuclear warhead with a ballistic missile delivery system.
