PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Medicine: GPs: Behind Closed Doors, 8pm, Channel 5

There are a number of cases facing Dr Andrew Cordell (left) and the team tonight as a woman struggling to walk and suffering from dizzy spells visits the surgery and there are concerns that her rapid decline may be caused by a rare musclewasting disease. A schoolgirl with a rash is examined and a patient who is having to contend with chronic pain and fatigue is treated, hoping for a solution to bring an end to the demoralising effects of their condition.

Soap: Emmerdale, 7pm, ITV

It is never good when a picture from a soap opera shows someone holding a gun, so you can expect drama in Emmerdale tonight. A wound-up Josh stupidly takes Pollard’s shotgun after some teasing from Jamie and his gang. Before long the police are called, after the weapon is fired. However, Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant, above right, with Conner Chapman as Josh) is implicated in the terrible accident which has happened.

History: My Family, Partition And Me: India 1947, 9pm, BBC1

Anita Rani was born in Bradford and raised as part of a Sikh family. Rightly, she is incredibly proud of her heritage. The broadcaster (left) fronts this two-part documentary in which her own relatives feature. She examines the stories of four British families, one Muslim, one Hindu, one colonial and her own, who lived in India at the time of Partition in 1947, when the country was divided and the new nation of Pakistan was created. They travel for the first time to the homes in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh that their relatives fled in terror, meeting long-lost family friends and neighbours of other religions, who shielded their families at huge personal risk.

Documentary: Long Lost Family, 9pm, ITV

The two stories featured tonight come from Cardiff and Blackpool. In Wales, Corine (above, second right) searches for the son she gave up for adoption when she was just 15 years old but fears he may not forgive her once he finds out she has since adopted two others since then. Steve, meanwhile, searches for his birth mother who gave him up for adoption following the death of her partner.

Gardening: Love Your Garden, 8pm, ITV

A four-year-old girl with very limited sight in Hythe, Hampshire, is the person Alan Titchmarsh (right) and his team are setting out to work on behalf of this week. Sadly, Isabelle will eventually lose her sight totally. But before that day the Love Your Garden team want to create a sensory outdoor space for her to enjoy. They turn the family’s garden into a safe haven, where she can learn about the world in a comfortable environment.
