Ann Wrighton called Peter, 83, a “lovely, gentle husband, dad and grandfather” as police continued to hunt for his savage killer.

Post-mortem tests revealed the father-of-two was repeatedly stabbed in the head and neck.

It is feared Mr Wrighton, of Banham, Norfolk, may have been murdered after stumbling across a drugs deal as he walked in woods near the neighbouring village of East Harling on Saturday.

Mr Wrighton’s family said he had moved to the area 30 years ago to enjoy a simple life with his family and dogs, having retired after working for BT for 35 years.

Ann spoke of his “love of walking his dogs and chatting with people to pass the time of day”.

In a statement released by Norfolk Police yesterday, she added: “Peter was immensely kind and never had a bad word to say about anybody.

“People always seemed to take a liking to him.

“We are extremely thankful for all the people who have come forward to speak with the police and hope we will soon be able to understand why this has happened.” His two dogs – a 10-year-old foxhound cross and a 13-year-old trailhound cross – stayed beside him until his body was found by a passer-by.

Neighbours have also paid tribute to the popular dog lover.

Claire Hansey, 52, said: “He was a nice bloke, just a lovely bloke.

“You don’t expect to be murdered, particularly after getting to that age, not when you’re walking dogs.

“You just hope that they catch whoever it is.”

Melissa Nelson, 39, said: “Peter was a true gentleman who wouldn’t hurt a fly.

“It’s heartbreaking.”
