Mo turns up heat

- IAN GORDON

MO FARAH swept into Saturday’s 5,000m final to stay on course for a golden double on his track championship farewell.

The 10,000m winner cruised through his heat, happy to settle for second place. Farah had needed three stitches after being spiked in a bruising 25-lap battle five days earlier but showed he had fully recovered.

The Somalia-born runner, 34, said: “I want to go out there and get one more gold. It would be pretty amazing to bow out with another double gold but these guys are coming for me.

“I have to be ready. I am going to do it. It’s all good but I am a bit tired – that was a tough run after the 10k final but I can just go back and rest and see what I can do.”

Farah controlled the race from the start and clocked 13mins 30.18secs as he crossed the line behind Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha with the top five certain to progress.

On the track where he powered to double Olympic gold five years ago, Farah looks odds-on to bring his championship track career to a glorious climax with another double.

He is aiming for his 11th global gold in a row over 5,000m or 10,000m on Saturday evening before switching to the lucrative road running circuit and the London Marathon next April.

He will be joined in the 5,000m final by fellow Briton Andrew Butchart, who finished seventh in his heat.

Laura Muir, edged out of bronze in the 1500m, begins her 5,000m bid tonight.

British record holder Nick Miller qualified for tomorrow’s hammer final with his first effort of 75.52m.

And Lorraine Ugen eased into the final of the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.63m.
