Sanchez out of curtain-raiser

- By Matthew Dunn

ALEXIS SANCHEZ is set to miss the start of the Premier League season tomorrow and could conceivably be out of action until the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The Chile forward reported back late to training on Sunday after taking part in the Confederations Cup then being laid low with flu, and promptly picked up an abdominal strain in his first session.

Consequently he is out of tomorrow night’s curtain-raiser against Leicester at the Emirates and also next weekend’s trip to Stoke.

Wenger even hinted he may miss an extra week, ruling him out of the trip to Liverpool but more importantly keeping him out of the limelight until transfer business has been concluded.

“He had a little strain that he caught on Sunday morning in training, before he came to Wembley,” said Wenger, who did not include Sanchez in his squad for the Community Shield win against Chelsea.

“He had a scan two days ago and he’s out for a while – I don’t know if it is two weeks or one more week, but he will not be available.”

And Wenger was far from certain over the future of a player who has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

“I can’t tell you that at the moment if there have been offers,” he said. “We are not open to any offers, anyway.

“When a player goes into the final year of their contract we will try to extend the contract because there is no reason we shouldn’t do it. But we are not there yet.

“All is possible, you know.”
