MAN, 50, HELD AFTER JOGGER BARGED WOMAN INTO PATH OF BUS

- By John Twomey

POLICE hunting a jogger who appeared to push a woman into the path of a double decker bus arrested a man yesterday.

The 50-year-old suspect was held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

He was detained at his home in Chelsea, south-west London, a short distance from Putney Bridge where the alleged attack happened in May.

The arrest came only two days after police released dramatic CCTV footage of the jogger appearing to shove the woman off her feet.

The 33-year-old victim was walking across the bridge when she was sent sprawling to the ground as a bus approached. Her life was saved when the quickthinking driver veered away and slammed on the brakes.

Passengers rushed to the aid of the woman, who was not seriously hurt.

Incredibly, the jogger came running across the bridge in the opposite direction about 15 minutes later.

His victim claims she tried to challenge him but he continued on his way.

The attacker was nicknamed the Putney Pusher after police released the CCTV film on Tuesday. A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said yesterday: “Police investigating an assault after a jogger appeared to push a woman into the path of an oncoming bus in Putney have made an arrest.

Questioning

“A 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm following police enquiries at an address in the Chelsea area.”

The suspect was taken to a south London police station for questioning and later released, the Yard said.

In a statement earlier this week, police said: “At about 7.40am on Friday, 5 May, the 33-year-old victim was walking across Putney Bridge on the east side heading towards Putney Bridge Tube station when a male jogger knocked her over into the road and into the path of an oncoming bus, which narrowly missed hitting her.

“The bus stopped…She received minor injuries from the incident.”
