Honeyman so sweet

- ALEX CROOK

GEORGE HONEYMAN kept his feet to take Sunderland through an awkward Carabao Cup tie when it seemed they were losing their cool.

The midfielder, 22, took on substitute Joel Asoro’s pass and lifted a shot over keeper Joe Murphy to see off League One Bury with his first senior goal.

But it looked as if Sunderland might fall flat on their faces when Wahbi Khazri tumbled

on to his back after Tom Aldred’s stumble let him run clear, five minutes into the second half.

But having gone round the keeper, Khazri lost his footing and ended up flat on his back with the goal gaping. Khazri then went into the book for a wild challenge on Bury wing-back Craig Jones. Sunderland were good value for their win, inspired by midfielder Darron Gibson on his comeback.

The midfielder made his first appearance since a drunken bar rant against his team-mates less than two weeks ago went public after being filmed by a fan.

Bury had skipper Stephen Dawson taken off on a stretcher after an innocuous early collision with Gibson. BRIGHTON have smashed their transfer record for the second time in a week by signing winger Jose Izqueirdo from Bruges for £13.5million.

“We’ve been aware of him for some time,” said Brighton manager Chris Hughton. “When he helped Bruges win the title in 2015-16, he was Belgium’s Player of the Year.”

Brighton have also signed winger Soufyan Ahannach from Dutch side Almere City on a three-year deal.
