Ugen falls short on a foul night

- Richard Lewis

LORRAINE UGEN saw red instead of gold, silver or bronze on a disappointing night for the Briton in the long jump final.

The British No1 had four fouls – accompanied with four red flags – as she finished fifth, with her best effort being the third of 6.72metres, which saw her progress into the latter part of the competition.

But Ugen could go no further, with two more fouls before her final effort of 6.40m.

Like Ugen, American Brittney Reese also had only two legal jumps but she did enough to take gold with 7.02m from the third round from neutral athlete Darya Klishina (7.00m) and Tianna Bartoletta, the defending champion and Olympic champion from the USA, in third with 6.97m.

Britain’s Chris O’Hare booked his place in tomorrow’s 1500m final after finishing fourth in the second semi-final in 3:38.59.

O’Hare said: “I knew that if I could be in the top five at the bell I would be fine. No one is going into the final without any other expectation but to win a medal.”

Fellow Briton Jake Wightman failed to progress after finishing eighth in the opening heat.

Wightman said: “I look at people that have raced championships for years and they’re so calm, they don’t panic and they know that the option to move or gaps will open, but I am not confident enough to do that style of racing.”

The evening’s 100m hurdles semi-finals saw a blistering performance from Australia’s 2012 Olympic champion Sally Pearson.

She was in a different class last night as she booked her place in the final with the fastest time of the three races with 12.53secs.
