Wolves stay on the march

- By James McMath

PORTUGUESE duo Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota were on target as Wolves overcame another of their Championship promotion rivals to maintain their perfect start to the season.

Wolves broke their transfer record to sign Neves from Porto for £15.8million and it took less than six minutes for him to show his class.

Hull had Burnley target Sam Clucas in their midfield but he was guilty of allowing Neves too much time 25 yards from goal and he made Hull pay, arrowing an unstoppable drive beyond Allan McGregor.

Wolves were in cruise control for much of the first half but some slack marking saw Nuno Espirito Santo’s team concede their first goal of the campaign.

The visitors were undone by slack marking at a set-piece as Kamil Grosicki’s cross after a short corner found Michael Dawson and he headed home from six yards.

But Wolves, who have already beaten Middlesbrough and Derby, responded well to the setback and they were back in front two minutes before the break. Bright Enobakhare tricked his way to the line and crossed perfectly to give Jota a first-time finish at the back post.

Wolves have spent freely this summer in an effort to return to the top flight for the first time since 2012 and the optimism from the away end was audible.

Hull, meanwhile, have done more selling than buying and their squad looks flimsy.

Sure enough Nouha Dicko added a third for Wolves in the final minute of normal time. Hull rallied and – 10 minutes into injury-time – grabbed a goal back via David Meyler’s penalty.
