Football stars and celebrities pitch in for Grenfell victims

- By Mark Reynolds

A CHARITY football match to support the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire is to be televised.

The game, featuring stars from local club Queens Park Rangers, is to be broadcast by Sky.

The programme, #Game4Grenfell, will be televised as part of an afternoon of special programming on Saturday, September 2.

Former football professionals, celebrities and special guests will play a 90-minute match at QPR’s 18,000-capacity Loftus Road stadium in Shepherd’s Bush – the closest league ground to Grenfell Tower.

Singers Olly Murs, Tinie Tempah, and Jarvis Cocker are set to take to the pitch, alongside ex-professional footballers Les Ferdinand, David Seaman and Alan Shearer.

Stoke City’s Peter Crouch will play alongside his childhood friend Gregg Jules, a firefighter who was involved in the blaze.

Fire ripped through the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in North Kensington on June 14, leaving at least 80 dead and more than 70 injured. The match is the brainchild of QPR co-chairman Tony Fernandes. He has worked alongside QPR director of football and former England striker Ferdinand, who grew up on an estate close to Grenfell Tower.

The event has been organised by the QPR in the Community Trust and is supported by Marcus Mumford, lead singer of Mumford & Sons, who lives near the tower.

Sky’s Philip Edgar-Jones said: “Through the power of football, the aim for #Game4Grenfell is to raise funds for those affected by the tragic events of June.

“We hope our broadcast will let millions of people across the country stand together with the Grenfell community.”
